This is NOT the adapter for the eTrex Vista Cx!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I ordered this adapter because the description said “most eTrex models” and the Vista Cx was not listed as one of the incompatible models… beware, it is NOT compatible with the eTrex Vista Cx.

VERY OVERPRICED!

(Copied of my review of the ‘Garmin 12-Volt Car Power Cable for eTrex, Legend C and Vista C (010-10563-00)’ and it all applies here as well)

No matter how much I want continuous power to my Garmin I just can’t pay that much for a little power cable that costs probably $1 to make. It’s the principle of it.

Instead I did some research and discovered a nifty little item called a USB car adapter for as low as two dollars! – then I can just use the USB cord that came with the unit! Only the wires needed for supplying power are used and not those for the data (they are separate wires in the cord). For more info do a search on Wikipedia for USB, and Goggle and right here at Amazon for USB car chargers.

I found a great dual charging unit elsewhere for $15 including shipping. With the dual unit I can charge my eTrex Vista HCx and phone or PDA, both at the same time. Just make sure the power output is 4.75 to 5.25V, that’s the USB power specification. All but one of the units I found where in the proper power range though one was 7.2V, which is too high.

BTW, the little connector at the eTrex is also a USB connecter, just a different type (shape) then you may be used to. They call it a `mini USB,’ while the larger one on the other end (of the cord that came with the unit) is a `USB type A’, the same you typically see for computers and flash cards. It doesn’t matter though, they are just differently shaped connectors that do exactly the same thing.

Don’t pay Garmin’s outrageous prices. Get a USB car adapter and power your eTrex through the USB cord supplied with your unit. It’s the same as when you plug your unit into your computer’s USB port and the computer supplies the unit with 5V power. Enjoy

Poor Quality

Bought this item with my Garmin etrex and it only worked for about three weeks.

does not say it is “incompatible with CX series”
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I received this DC power adapter for my garmin etrex venture CX in high hopes it would work with my particular gps. It does not state it wasnt incompatible and only says in the description that it is compatible with etrex venture models. And, lo and behold it is NOT compatible with ETREX VENTURE CX, you need a model with the cigarette to 5pin adapter. I did receive a blackberry from work which has one of those and it works great with my gps.

Garmin Vehicle DC Power Adapter for eTrex and Geko (010-10203-00)
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Finish: Satisfactory

Functional Rating: Not tested Yet.

Problem: The GPS end USB connector is not supplied. Which is not good.

Alternative: Any Vehicle DC Power adaptor ranging 3.5 to 4 volt is good substitute.

Great Accesory
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money buying two separate accesories, you should try this one, is a bit bulky but that doesn’t matter while you’re driving.

Garmin Car Charger
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Am using the car charger with a Garmin eTrex Legend and it works just like it should. I can use it on car trips without worrying about the batteries running down (Be aware that it does NOT charge the batteries, just powers the Garmin so the batteries are not used. A separate battery charger is needed.) Main complaint is that the charger is specific to only my Garmin eTrex and that all companies are doing the same thing. Presently I have to travel with a charger for the Garmin, one for my cellphone and another for my iPod. As a result I own six chargers; three for the car and three for the wall. And add three more cables for connecting each to the PC.

This item is a piece of junk. It doesn’t work……. how can an item so simple to build not work? Do not waste your money and time on this item.

Doesn’t fit the Vista CX
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Though the write up stated that this car adapter fits the eTrex Vista it does not fit the eTrex Vista CX. Amazon did give a full refund to include postage.

Does Not Work with eTrex Legend Cx
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This auto adapter does NOT work with eTrex Legend Cx. The link provided by Amazon and the text accompanying text is misleading; this said when even going from the purchase of the Legend Cx to the auto adapter it doesn’t warn you off of this model. It would have been nice had the description said it doesn’t work with the Cx series. Now I am stuck with returning the unit and going through all of that hassle – something I should not be doing.

Works great, but its another wire!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This adapter is functional, is easy to use, enables continued use of backlight, and saves the batteries for walking with the eMap after arriving in a strange town. When I want to connect other media while driving with my family, I use a 12v 3-Outlet Car Power Adapter. Despite another wire, it’s a worthwhile accessory.

CAUTION: This adapter is NOT for eTrex Legend or Vista
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’m sure this thing works fine on some GPS units… but it’s less than clear that this adaper WILL NOT WORK on the Legend or Vista. The title is misleading (it says “most” eTrex), the Product Description is just wrong (it says “all” eTrex). FOR The eTrex LEGEND or VISTA, you need a different adapter!!

Simple and to the point
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I’d forget about the power down), and I’d have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

Though shown as an accessory for the Garmin Model I ordered at the same time, it had the incorrect fitting so could not be used and had to be returned.

Garmin accessories ripoff.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Garmin’s apparent business plan:

1. Create a bewildering series of products using the same basic integrated circuits, but different connectors.

2. Ripoff the customers on accessories.

This adapter should sell for less than $25: look elsewhere.

Poor quality & design, great Garmin Support
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this for my Vista and upon first insertion into the cig. lighter it broke a small plastic tab inside the unit that prevents the side spring metal pieces (that are connected to GND when in the lighter hole) from coming in contact with a diode. This shorts the diode to ground and it blows the fuse. I rigged it to still work and had another one sent to me and I opened it and it looked fine, then I plugged it in and got a blown fuse. I opened it and the tab was broken. I then called Garmin directly and the tech support guy opened his up to look at what I was talking about. He said he had not had a problem and the company I got mine from must have gotten a bad batch. He has sent me one in the mail (no charge!) and I hope to have better luck with it. I also think this unit is a little expensive. I know it must have a regulator inside since the etrex series does not have an internal regulator(as the 12xl and many others have) but a [dollar amount] list price is ridiculous. The Garmin customer support is the best so I will give it 2 stars.

Does not fit my eTrex
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have no idea whether this works, because “Most eTrex models” does not include my eTrex Vista CX.

Amazon and/or Garmin should make the limits of the models this is meant for clearer in their ad.

you sold me the wrong part
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I ordered the car adapter that was listed with the GPS unit I was buying. I did not have an occasion to use the adapter until yesterday, 20 NOV 07, 31 days after ordering, and was I surprised. You sold me an adapter that does not work with the model I bought. It is also past your return limit of 30 days, so I am SOL. I’ll just find some place else to buy from in the future.

Thanks a lot

Good product, but an expensive accessory.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This product is a must if you use your GPS in your car. It will save you many, many batteries. I like the quality. It feels solid. The LED on the lighter plug is useful. It indicates that you have power. The piece that snaps into the eTrex seems to connect well. It’s never come unplugged after rolling around in my truck. The cord is plenty long for my needs–about four feet. My only complaint is the cost. The price was a little more than I would liked to have spent, but it’s the only game in town.

Did the job….
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This adapter does exactly what I wanted it too:
1) Save the battery while I’m in the car.
2) Increase reception; the signal seems to be stronger when I’ve got my etrx plugged in.
3) Easy on, easy off. No problems whatsoever.

The product description says that this charger works for all Garmin e-Trex models… Oopps! Except for the Legend Cx, which is the one I happen to have, so it was an expensive mistake for me.

Does what it’s supposed to do.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Although the eTrexes were really designed for use in the outdoors, I use it in the car to help predict distance to go, etc., and if I have the local map downloaded to it, it has helped me out of binds on a couple of occasions. If you use it in the car, you really want this adaptor to save your batteries.

Not only will it save the batteries, but I can operate my Legend in normal mode to get better position from the WAAS data. (Battery saver mode precludes the use of WAAS and normal mode can really drain the batteries rather quickly.) (BTW, there is no scientific reason for reception to be better because of using this adapter.)

The cord is generously long. In fact, it can get in the way sometimes, but may allow the unit to be passed to the back seat so your back seat navigator can monitor it.

I have only two minor complaints. The first is the price. The Garmin Legend gives a lot of feature for the price, but Garmin seems to make up for it with the price of the accessories. It seems this adaptor should cost half what it does.

The second is that the fuse is accessed by screwing off the center of the cigarette plug, and the center piece has unscrewed itself on a couple of occasions now, leaving several small parts strewn about. I had to dig in my glove compartment this weekend for all of the little parts, and am waiting for the day I lose one for good. So be careful that the center is always screwed in.

I use this with the suction cup mount, which works quite well on glass. (But again, seems kind of expensive for what it is.)
