Any ideas on why the arrow on my Garmin eTrex Legend goes crazy when close to a GeoCache?

I recently got into geocaching, and I've been using my Garmin eTrex Legend to find most of them.
However, every time we go for a cache the arrow points us in the right direction up until 400-300ft from the cache. From there, it changes direction every second.
The distance, however, works very well, so what we do is we walk in several directions to see which way the distance decreases. This is how we have been finding them, without the use of the arrow. While this works, it is not as convenient, and I'd like the arrow to point at least in a general direction.
I'm pretty sure it is not the battery, so does anyone have any ideas on why the arrow does not work whatsoever?
